Lakeside city on the border of Austria, Germany and Switzerland
You’ll find Bregenz tucked away in the westernmost corner of Austria on the shores of Lake Constance (“Bodensee”). This charming city is the capital of the Vorarlberg region.
With roots dating back to Celtic and Roman times, Bregenz has evolved into a vibrant cultural hub while retaining its historic charm. Here you can expect to discover more of Austria’s rich cultural heritage.
The city's most iconic and recognisable event is the Bregenz Festival. It was started in 1946 and is now part of the city’s legacy. Each summer, Bregenz hosts the finest outdoor opera performances against the backdrop of the lake.
As you explore, don’t miss the Old Town (or “Upper Town”) with its picturesque, narrow cobbled streets and medieval buildings. One of the city’s centrepieces is the Baroque St Martin’s Tower (“Martinsturm”). The first floor houses an exhibit about the city and from the top you could admire panoramic views of the surroundings.
Bregenz also boasts modern architectural marvels, including the Kunsthaus Bregenz, a contemporary art museum renowned for its innovative exhibitions. Or you could pop into the Vorarlberg Museum to uncover the history and folklore of the region.
If you’d rather spend more time outdoors, Bregenz is ideal for outdoor enthusiasts. You could indulge in walking or biking in the nearby mountains. Or take to the water on the beautiful Lake Constance.
