Historic fortress overlooking the city of Salzburg
Perched majestically atop the Festungsberg hill, Hohensalzburg is a fortress that dominates the skyline of Salzburg. This medieval marvel, one of the largest and best-preserved fortresses in Europe, offers you an enchanting journey into the city's past.
Hohensalzburg’s history dates to the 11th century. It was built by archbishop Gebhard as a defence against potential hostile attacks. The current architecture and appearance of the fortress can be attributed to archbishop Leonhard von Keutschach in the 1500s.
You can visit Hohensalzburg to learn more about the storied past of Salzburg. Walk through the intricately decorated rooms such as the Prince’s Chamber and the Magic Theatre. The Castle Museum will take you through a thousand years of history.
If you’re travelling with kids, then try your best at the fortress games. Or pop by the Puppet Museum to have a go at being a puppeteer.
Another reason to visit is to take in the panorama from the fortress. You’ll get views of the city below but also of the surrounding Alps. Hohensalzburg is easily accessible by funicular. Or enjoy the brisk uphill walk on a sunny day.
