Austrian Alps' highest mountain
Grossglockner, Austria's highest peak, stands as a majestic symbol of the country's alpine grandeur. This mountain has long captivated adventurers and nature enthusiasts and you’re sure to understand why as soon as you spot it in the distance.
Its rugged, snow-capped summit rises to 3,798 metres (12,460 feet), dominating the skyline of the Hohe Tauern National Park.
The nickname of Grossglockner is the “black mountain” because of a legend that shrouds the peak. The stories say that a black crystal is hidden at its heart, concentrating the mountain’s energy.
You might also notice the glacier that sits right beneath Grossglockner. That is Pasterze, the longest glacier in the Eastern Alps and in all of Austria. It measures more than 8 kilometres (5 miles) in length, although it is disappearing at a fast pace.
The Grossglockner High Alpine Road is a fantastic mountain pass to experience if you’re in the area. It’s also a feat of engineering, winding through the heart of the national park and offering access to the mountain's base.
The breathtaking beauty and enchanting location of the mountain make it one of the Austrian Alps’ top destinations. If you spend time here, you’re in for a treat! Picture panoramas of glacial valleys, pristine meadows, and dramatic peaks all around.
Accessible during the warmer months, Grossglockner invites you to take a journey amidst the untamed beauty of the Austrian Alps.
