Austrian village with a postcard backdrop
Hallstatt is a picture-perfect destination that is a dream if you’re looking for Austrian charm and Alpine landscapes. You’ll find this lovely village tucked away by Lake Hallstatt in the Salzkammergut region.
The towering Dachstein mountains all around offer a stunning backdrop that makes the whole scene look like a postcard. Stop at the Aussichtspunkt Hallstatt viewpoint to take in the iconic skyline of the town with its Alpine chalets, church spire and views of the hills.
As you wander through the cobbled streets, you’ll see first-hand why this picturesque spot was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Spend some time exploring the town’s history at the Hallstatt Museum (“Welterbemuseum Hallstatt”).
Salzwelten Hallstatt, the Hallstatt’s salt mine, is a must-visit. Mining started here 7,000 years ago, making it the oldest salt mine in the world. Adventure yourself inside its tunnels to discover more and visit the interactive exhibit.
If, rather than plunge into its underground heritage, you’d rather see its soaring heights, head to Hallstatt Skywalk (“Welterbeblick”). Hop aboard the Salzbergbahn funicular which will take you high up in only a few minutes. This platform stands at 360 metres (1,200 feet) above the town, allowing you to take in grand views of the surrounding beauty.
While Hallstatt's popularity has soared in recent years, its timeless charm remains intact. You’re sure to be enchanted by its fairytale-like looks, its storied past and renowned Alpine scenery.
