One of Austria's most important historical buildings
Head into the charming Old Town of Innsbruck to find the majestic palace Hofburg. It stands today as a remnant of Austria’s imperial past and grandeur.
As you approach the Imperial Palace, its imposing façade and intricate detailing will immediately command your attention. The palace offers a captivating experience of Austrian history, culture, and art.
The architecture is a blend of Gothic and Renaissance styles, as it was originally completed in 1500 but later updated in the 18th century. This means that when you visit, you’re in for a journey through time.
The palace was built under Maximilian I, born in Austria in 1459 and later crowned emperor of the Holy Roman Empire. The original palace was built to the same scale as you can see today. In the mid-1700s, the ruler of Habsburg, Maria Theresa, renovated the palace to make it more modern to the time.
Later, Archduke Karl Ludwig refurbished part of the castle for his sister-in-law, the famous Empress Elisabeth (Sisi). She stayed in the inner apartments several times with her husband, Emperor Franz Joseph.
All this history is why the palace has such a rich legacy. You’ll be able to visit the Crest Tower from Maximilian’s time, the Giant Hall adored by Maria Theresa, and Empress Sisi’s lavish apartment.
Today, the palace is property of the state. It is a must to visit during your time in Innsbruck. It is considered one of the most important historic buildings in Austria.
