Follow in the dancing footsteps of The Sound of Music
Wander around Salzburg and you’re sure to spot the lavish Mirabell Palace (“Schloss Mirabell”). This is one of the must-see historic landmarks in the city.
The palace is a Baroque masterpiece that exudes elegance and charm. Located on the banks of the Salzach River, this architectural gem is surrounded by immaculate gardens, offering you an enchanting visit.
Built in the early 17th century, Mirabell is another of Austria’s vestiges from its Imperial times. But love is at the heart of this palace as it was built by Prince-Archbishop Wolf Dietrich von Raitenau for his beloved.
Enter and you’ll be able to take in the incredible Marble Hall, a former banquet hall. It was once used for concerts, although it is a favoured wedding venue these days.
But it’s the Mirabell Gardens that might be most worth the detour. In fact, if you’re a fan of The Sound of Music, you won’t want to miss them! The Mirabell Gardens were the setting for the famous “Do Re Mi” song that Maria and the children sing while dancing around the Pegasus Fountain.
The gardens were completely redesigned in the late 1600s, but kept their original geometrical form. Take a stroll through the Hedge Theatre, the Rose Garden and the Orangery.
