A city steeped in musical heritage
Salzburg is a city immortalised by Mozart's melodies and the timeless beauty of its Baroque architecture. Today, you’ll find it a captivating destination that blends art, culture and history. Salzburg is also in an ideal location, close to the Eastern Alps and the border with Germany’s Bavarian region.
During your visit to Salzburg, you won’t want to miss the historic Altstadt (“Old Town”), a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Here you can explore charming cobblestone streets lined with medieval and Baroque landmarks.
The history of Salzburg dates back to Celtic and Roman times, but it was under Bavarian rule that it flourished. This is when the Festung Hohensalzburg fortress, which dominates the panorama of the city, was established. Salzburg claimed its independence from Bavaria in the 14th century before being annexed into the Austrian Empire in the 19th century.
Its dark history continues throughout both World Wars. Although the city was heavily bombed by Allied forces during World War II, much of its Baroque architecture remained untouched. This leaves Salzburg as one of the few remaining cities with this style.
Today, you can learn all about the city’s history at various museums and palaces. Pick between visiting the ancient Hohensalzburg fortress or the lavish Schloss Mirabell. Wander around the DomQuartier to take in the glitzy Residenz palace and Salzburg Cathedral.
If you find that the city has an Italian character, it’s because prince-archbishops designed parts of Salzburg in this way. There was a wish for it to become the “Rome of the North”.
You’ll definitely want to take some time to delve into the musical past and cultural legacy of Salzburg. The city is the birthplace of Mozart after all! And if you’re a fan of The Sound of Music, you’ll recognise it as the setting and filming location of the film.
Let yourself be charmed by the city’s rich heritage. Take a stroll through the historic streets, delve into history and indulge in Austrian delicacies at traditional cafés.
