Salzburg's most sacred building
Steeped in history and architectural grandeur, Salzburg Cathedral (“Dom zu Salzburg”), stands as a symbol of the city's religious and cultural legacy. Of all the city’s churches, this is its most important and the one you’ll definitely want to make time to visit.
You’ll find Salzburg Cathedral nestled between Residenzplats, Domplatz and Kapitelplatz. It is a part of the famous DomQuartier complex.
Through the ages there have been many versions of the cathedral. The first one was built in 767. But fires and conflict have meant that new cathedrals have been built here over the centuries.
The newest structure was consecrated in 1628. It was partly damaged during World War II, so Salzburg Cathedral’s current form dates to the late 1950s. Today the church is a centrepiece of the city and welcomes you for both spiritual contemplation and cultural exploration.
When you visit, you can admire the outside architecture and the awe-inspiring interiors. Upon your arrival, you’ll be greeted by an elegant marble façade and large statues. Step inside to discover vaulted ceilings, a lavish chapel and a striking organ.
If you’re a fan of Mozart, don’t miss the bronze baptismal font dating to 1311. This is where he was christened.
