Cultural heart of Salzburg's historic centre
Located in the heart of Salzburg, the DomQuartier is a cultural treasure trove encompassing the city's cathedral, the Residenz Palace, and several museums.
Take a stroll through the Altstadt and you’ll come upon this group of landmarks surrounding the Residenzplatz plaza. Together they were made a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1996.
DomQuartier was created by Salzburg’s prince-archbishops more than 400 years ago. Their objective? To transform the town into an Italian-style Baroque oasis. This is how the complex was constructed, with the Residenz and Cathedral taking centre stage.
After having been divided in the 1800s, the Residenz and Cathedral are connected once again today. You can take a tour of both, which would also include St. Peter’s Abbey. This will let you walk through 1,300 years of Salzburg’s history, exploring themes such as politics, art, music and architecture.
Picture yourself walking through state rooms in the Residenz, then admiring elegant paintings from the 1500-1800s. You’ll then pass through the Cathedral, offering you impressive views of the Old Town.
During your visit, you can expect more than one architectural masterpiece and an immersive experience of Salzburgh’s cultural heritage. The DomQuartier does an excellent job at weaving together the spiritual and secular aspects of the city’s history.
