A German state brimming with culture
Bavaria might be exactly what you picture when you think of all things German. The largest region of Germany has it all: spectacular nature, bustling cities and vibrant culture. This is the perfect place to immerse yourself in rich history, explore charming streets and sample some delicious food and drink.
The storied past of Bavaria dates back to the Iron Age, when Celtic tribes lived here. It’s been part of many different empires across thousands of years, and was even an independent state for most of the 19th century. Though now part of Germany, Bavaria maintains a strong independent spirit.
As you explore this region, you’re likely to hear local dialects being spoken. You might also notice people dressed in traditional clothing, called Tracht. This is especially true if you’re visiting during a festival or celebration.
The food here, too, differs from the rest of the country, with plenty of regional specialities to try. Some delicacies include white sausage (“Weißwurst”), traditional pork roast (“Schweinsbraten”) and Nuremberg grilled sausage (“Nürnberger Rostbratwurst”). This last one is named for Bavaria’s second city, Nuremberg.
The beer in Bavaria is considered some of the best in the world, so make sure to sample some while you are here.
Bavaria’s capital is Munich, a bustling and historic city best known for its annual Oktoberfest celebration. This is the world’s largest beer festival, attracting around 6 million visitors to the city every year! The local people see the festival as a representation of their easygoing, fun-loving and hospitable nature.
This region is also home to some of Germany’s most spectacular castles. You can witness fairytale turrets at Neuschwanstein, relax in elegant gardens at Linderhof or explore lavish rooms at Nymphenburg. At each one, you’ll feel immersed in Bavaria’s royal history and cultural heritage.
