Mountain views from all angles
Berchtesgaden is a region in Bavaria in south-eastern Germany, close to the border with Austria. It’s known for its outstanding natural sights, from mountain ranges to rolling green forests and crystal-clear lakes. Make sure to stop here to soak up the atmosphere of the Alps.
Officially, Berchtesgaden refers to the locality of this area that includes towns, villages and green spaces. It’s best known, though, for giving its name to Berchtesgaden National Park. This protected area was established in 1978 to preserve the spectacular landscapes of the Berchtesgaden Alps.
Later, in 1990, UNESCO designated the park a Biosphere Reserve. You’ll want to spend some time exploring, enjoying the clear Alpine air and abundant forests and waterways. There are hiking trails and lakeside beaches at the foot of the mountains, and higher up there are even ski resorts.
Look out for one of the highest mountains in the area, the Watzmann, towering above the scenery. Another peak is Kehlstein, upon which you can visit the Eagle’s Nest historic site, built by the Nazi regime during the Second World War.
Don’t miss a detour past the iconic Lake Königssee, a glacial lake that lies between steep mountains. There’s a popular hike you can do here to visit the secluded St Bartholomew’s Church.
