A crystal clear lake nestled in the Berchtesgaden National Park
Tucked away in one of Germany’s southern tips is the secluded oasis of Lake Königssee. This Bavarian gem is located mostly within the Berchtesgaden National Park, close to the border of Austria. Stop here for a tranquil break amongst the mountainous landscape of the Alps.
This deep waterway was formed by a glacier during the last ice age. It’s about 8 kilometres (5 miles) long and surrounded by steep mountainsides, giving it the appearance of a fjord. You’ll be amazed by the clear and calm Alpine waters nestled amongst the green, rocky hills.
Since 1909, only electric ships, paddle boaters or rowers have been allowed on Königssee. This gives the lake a famed reputation for clean and clear waters. If you’re looking for somewhere to relax and take a dip, you won’t find many better places!
On a peninsula on the western lake shore, don’t miss St Bartholomew’s Church, a famous pilgrimage destination. It can only be reached by boat or by a long hike through the mountains. When you arrive you’ll be met by magnificent red domes, white walls and unspoilt natural surroundings.
