The largest lake in Germany
In the far south of Germany, the borders of 3 nations meet across an Alpine lake. Constance, also called “Bodensee”, has shores in Switzerland and Austria as well as Bavaria. It’s a spellbinding place of natural beauty that you won’t want to miss on your journey through the Alps.
The third largest freshwater lake in Western Europe, Constance’s vast blue expanse makes for a breathtaking view from any angle. Whether you stop by on the German, Swiss or Austrian shore, you’ll encounter charming, colourful villages and tranquil lakeside pathways.
Take your pick of towns to visit or activities to try. There are cycle paths and ferries which can take you from one town to another, with picturesque sights all around. You can try your hand at kayaking or paddle boarding. Or, dine in any number of lakeside restaurants.
Look out for ancient castles and churches as you explore the region. Some historic towns on Constance’s edges include Konstanz, Friedrichshafen, Lindau and Bregenz. You’ll be able to spot mountain peaks from almost anywhere around this area. And to the lake’s west side, discover Europe’s most powerful waterfall, Rhine Falls.
