A rococo royal palace steeped in history
Germany is known across the world for the grand castles and palaces that decorate its mountainsides and cities. One iconic “schloss” you must visit on your tour of the Alps is Linderhof Palace, a small masterpiece located amongst the vivid mountainous landscape of Bavaria.
This compact yet elegant castle was built by Bavarian King Ludwig II. Ludwig was famed for his castle-building hobby. He began the process of constructing 3 spectacular residences in his lifetime, but the only one he managed to complete was Linderhof in 1886.
Ludwig was hugely influenced by the “Sun King”, Louis XIV of France. Though Linderhof is much smaller than the Palace of Versailles, nods to the iconic French château can be seen all over Ludwig’s design. For one, the intricately carved stone exterior was created in the Rococo style favoured by Louis.
After admiring the palace’s elegant outsides, step in to explore masterful interiors. Though smaller than other European palaces, Linderhof’s rich design and entertaining history make it well worth a visit. You’ll be able to tour through the Hall of Mirrors, two tapestry rooms and Ludwig’s bedchamber, amongst other rooms.
Surrounding the palace, you’ll find one of the world’s most beautiful formal gardens, combining Renaissance, Baroque and English landscape styles. The calming symmetry and lush greenery make for a tranquil environment to wander through. There are also hidden gems to discover in the grounds, such as the Moorish Kiosk.
