The tallest mountain in Germany

A journey into the awe-inspiring Alps means encountering some serious peaks. One of these is Zugspitze, Germany’s tallest mountain. You’ll find it in the south of Bavaria, close to the town of Garmisch-Partenkirchen. The sight of its wide, rugged summit as you approach is sure to take your breath away.

The pinnacle of this massif stands at an astonishing 2,962 metres (9,718 feet) above sea level. Though Zugspitze is Germany’s highest peak, parts of the mountain actually cross over into Austria. In fact, before the European Union came to be, there was a border office up there in the clouds!

To reach the top, you can board the Zugspitze cogwheel cable car from Garmisch-Partenkirchen to its final station, the Zugspitzplatt glacier. From there, you can hop on a glacier cable car, which will carry you up another 360 metres (1,181 feet) to an observation deck at the mountain’s peak.

You’ll be rewarded by panoramic views of mountain peaks all around, with forests, towns and lakes stretching out below. There’s both a German and an Austrian half of the deck, so you can step over a border in the sky. There’s also a café to relax in amongst the scenery.
