Where Alpine and Mediterranean cultures meet
You’ll find Bolzano in the heart of South Tyrol, where Alpine and Mediterranean cultures harmoniously blend. Bolzano has been a vital crossroads since Roman times, later flourishing under the Austro-Hungarian Empire before becoming part of Italy after World War I.
Today it’s the capital of the region and a must-stop in Northern Italy. You’ll witness all of its rich history reflected in the city's bilingual nature, with both Italian and German spoken widely. Good to know is that Bolzano’s German name is Bozen.
Another (quite large) detail you’re likely to notice is the stunning backdrop of the city. Bolzano is surrounded by the striking Dolomites mountains, offering breathtaking views and a wealth of outdoor activities in the area.
The city's setting in a broad valley makes it a natural gateway to both mountain adventures and vineyard tours. This is one of the best features of Bolzano’s unique Alpine-Mediterranean character.
During your visit, you’ll see that Bolzano is a vibrant city with a high quality of life and cultural wealth. Wander the historic centre, walking the quaint streets and admiring the colourful buildings.
The city's vibrant atmosphere is most palpable in Piazza Walther, the central square named after the medieval poet Walther von der Vogelweide. It’s a hub of activity, lined with charming cafés and shops, and home to the renowned Bolzano Christmas Market each winter.
On the southern corner of the piazza, you’ll spot Bolzano Cathedral (“Duomo di Bolzano”). Take in the late-Gothic architecture or step inside to soak in the atmosphere.
In the city you could also pop into the South Tyrol Archaeological Museum (“Museo Archeologico dell'Alto Adige”). It is home to Ötzi the Iceman, a remarkably well-preserved mummy from the Copper Age. His story makes it worth the visit!
Slightly further afield, you could visit Castle Roncolo, the medieval fortress that sits atop a hill north of the city. The castle is known for its impressive ancient frescoes and charming location.
To take in the view from above, head for the Renon (Ritten) Cable Car. The gondolas travel from Bolzano to Soprabolzano in 12 minutes. From the air and from the top you’ll enjoy sweeping views of the city as well as the many peaks of the Dolomites.
