Charming lakeside city in Northern Italy

The Italian city of Como exudes an enchanting vibe that blends history, culture and scenic beauty. You’ll see it’s definitely worth the detour on your trip around the Alps.

Its location makes Como an accessible day trip from the south of Switzerland. The city sits right on the Swiss-Italian border and is only a 40-minute drive from the city of Lugano.

Come to Como and you can expect to be captivated by its medieval charm. Take the time to stroll through the city centre and stop for some al fresco dining on a sunny terrace.

Here, you’ll find hidden piazzas, winding cobbled streets, bustling markets and historic landmarks. Porta Torre, one of the city’s ancient gates, makes for a lovely photo stop. Keep an eye out for the 12th-century Romanesque Basilica di San Fedele and the Duomo di Como (“Como Cathedral”).

The city is also perfectly located for you to take in some of the breathtaking scenery of Lake Como. It sits around a bay at the bottom left of the lake. Follow the waterfront promenade, lined with elegant villas and vibrant gardens.  

You could take a relaxing boat cruise on Lake Como if you have time. This is the perfect way to soak in the mesmerising beauty of the surrounding mountains and crystal-clear waters.

The Como area is also full of cultural attractions. The Tempio Voltiano museum by the waterfront is dedicated to the pioneering scientist Alessandro Volta, who invented the electric battery. Or explore the city's vibrant art scene at the Pinacoteca Civica, home to a diverse collection of Italian masterpieces.
