The fashion capital of Italy
The fashion hub, financial centre and cultural icon that is Milan needs little introduction. On your journey through Northern Italy, the enduring city of Milan (“Milano”) is a must-visit. As well as its chic shopping opportunities, you’ll find incredible history and art to immerse yourself in here.
Milan’s origins date back to around 400 BCE, when Celtic tribes founded a settlement. It was then conquered by the Roman Empire in around 200 BCE. In the centuries since, it grew into a centre of commerce, culture, innovation and, of course, fashion.
You’ll want to spend some time admiring the unusual mix of modern architecture and ancient buildings. Begin in the historic centre (“Centro Storico”) to see the breathtaking spires of Milan Cathedral (“Duomo di Milano”), the third-largest church in the world.
Walk through the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, Italy’s oldest shopping gallery, to reach the Fashion Quarter (“Quadrilatero della Moda”), nicknamed the “Golden Quarter”. Here you can indulge in world-class shopping, or simply wander around and take in the atmosphere.
Other must-see attractions include Santa Maria delle Grazie, where Leonardo da Vinci painted The Last Supper. The painting is on display in the Museo del Cenacolo Vinciano, but make sure to pre-book! And don’t miss the grand, historic Milan Opera House (Teatro alla Scala or “La Scala”).
Just west of La Scala you’ll find the imposing Sforzesco Castle (Castello Sforzesco), a 15th-century fortification with a storied past. It offers a beautiful walk through its gardens for free.
