Medieval Italian town in the heart of South Tyrol

Set against a backdrop of snow-capped mountains, Vipiteno (also known as “Sterzing”) is one of the most beautiful villages in Italy. You’ll find this picturesque spot tucked in the heart of South Tyrol. Expect Alpine tranquillity and natural beauty combined with classic Italian charm.

Vipiteno’s proximity to Italy’s northern neighbour makes it an ideal day trip from the Austrian city of Innsbruck. Add it to your Alpine itinerary to experience la dolce vita for a day.

In Vipiteno you can explore winding streets lined with pastel buildings. Start in the Old Town to see charming Alpine homes with wooden shutters and flower baskets. The cobbled main street will lead you to the Torre delle Dodici and into the New Town.

The tower is one of Vipiteno’s landmarks that you can’t miss. It was built in the 15th century and stands today as a testament of the town’s history. Lining the streets are quaint shops offering traditional crafts and local delicacies. Then head for the historic town hall, a Gothic-style building with wooden features that showcases the former wealth of the Vipiteno people.

You might also want to pop into the Vipiteno Municipal Museum or the Multscher Museum for some local art and history.

For the outdoor enthusiast, Vipiteno offers a plethora of thrilling excursions. A unique one to try in the area is the summer toboggan from Rosskopf. Head up to the Monte Cavallo station to have a go. There are also scenic trails you could follow for a hike, leading to panoramic viewpoints.
