Historic wooden bridge crossing the river Reuss
The walkable city of Lucerne in Switzerland is the perfect balance of natural beauty and rich history. Make sure your visit to this picturesque place includes a stroll along the historic Chapel Bridge, which was originally built in 1333.
Linking the north and south banks of the Reuss river, this walkway is one of the oldest bridges of its kind in the world. Tragically, much of the original bridge was destroyed in a fire in 1993, but the restored bridge is a careful tribute to the original.
It’s for pedestrians only, so you can wander at your own pace and admire the views of the water and Lucerne’s buildings. During your walk, notice the stone water tower in the middle of the river, which is even older than the bridge itself.
What sets the “Kapellbrücke” apart is its roof, covering the whole bridge. The interior ceiling is decorated with intricate paintings, created in the 17th century by a local artist. His name was Hans Heinrich Wägmann and he created them as a record of Lucerne’s history.
