Iconic church in the heart of Zürich
As you walk along the banks of the Limmat river in Zürich, the green steeple of Fraumünster church won’t fail to catch your eye.
Fraumünster, or “Women’s Minster”, used to hold a lot of power in Zürich. The Abbess of Fraumünster was the one who held markets, collected tolls and minted coins, which essentially made her the ruler of the city.
The original abbey was founded in the year 853. Though Fraumünster is no longer a monastery, it still holds important historical meaning in Switzerland. It stands opposite its ancient rival, Grossmünster.
Admire the beautiful Romanesque architecture on the outside, then step inside to discover 5 magnificent stained glass windows. Installed by artist Marc Chagall in 1967, they show a cycle of biblical stories in vivid colours.
Head down into Fraumünster’s crypt for an exhibition about the Reformation in Zürich. Here you can also read the story of this ancient building from the 9th century until today.
