A train station in the sky
Gornergrat is a destination train station perched on a ridge overlooking Switzerland’s most famous mountain – the Matterhorn. A day trip to this spot is one of the most popular excursions in the area.
Here you’ll find, a panoramic observation deck and one of Europe’s highest hotels. You can also take in a multimedia experience – called “Zooom the Matterhorn”. It lets you get up close to the mountain via periscopes and a 3D cinema.
To get to the station, head to Zermatt where you can board the Gornergrat mountain rack railway, also known as a cogwheel railway. From here, you’ll be taken on a journey along Europe’s highest open-air cog railway to the station. When you arrive you’ll be at an altitude of around 3,089 metres (10,170 feet).
During the 35-minute ride, you can marvel at breathtaking views of the Matterhorn without even needing to leave your seat. And at the top, expect views of snow-capped peaks as far as the eye can see.
Among these mountains are 29 summits over 4,000 metres (13,123 feet). You’ll also be able to glimpse the glistening glaciers of Theodul and Gorner.
When the weather’s good, we highly recommend going for a short hike to beautiful Ruinsee. From this nearby lake, you’ll be treated to even more mind-blowing views of the Alps.
