A charming town surrounded by immense mountain peaks
Nestled at the base of the Eiger mountain, you’ll find the Swiss chalet-style village of Grindelwald. It has been a popular spot for people visiting the Alps since the 1800s when mountaineering took off in the area. Since then, Grindelwald has remained a much-loved spot in the Bernese Alps.
In the village itself, there are plenty of hotels, restaurants and cafés. Plus, you’ll find places to pick up souvenirs, local bakeries and a flurry of outdoor equipment and clothing stores.
What's more, the village is easy to get to as it's around just 20 kilometres (12.5 miles) from the well-connected town of Interlaken.
So head here, and as well as astonishing views of the Eiger’s dark north face, you’ll glimpse the well-known Jungfrau and Mönch mountains.
While exhilarating outdoor pursuits such as skiing, climbing and mountain biking are popular, you’ll also find a number of spa and wellness facilities. Plus, you can access over 300 kilometres (186 miles) of hiking trails from Grindelwald.
One of the best ways to get up high with little effort is by taking a gondola, cable car or mountain train. Just hop aboard and you’ll be treated to breathtaking views without needing to venture far from the station.
Some of the top ones to visit are Mürren, Schilthorn, First and Kleine Scheidegg. From the latter, you can carry on to the Jungfraujoch, or the “Top of Europe”. At an altitude of 3,454 metres (11,332 feet), it’s the highest railway station in Europe.
