The most recognised landmark in Zürich
In Zürich, Switzerland’s largest city, you’ll find the famous Grossmünster church on the banks of the Limmat river. It stands across a bridge from its historic rival, Fraumünster, which you can also visit. Grossmünster’s twin front towers and unique history set this beautiful building apart.
Legend says this church was founded by Charlemagne, the “father of Europe”. The story tells that he discovered the graves of Zürich’s patron saints, Felix and Regula, and built a church on top. Archaeologists have confirmed that there is a Roman burial ground here.
In the 16th century, Grossmünster was the centre of the Swiss Reformation. Explore a museum dedicated to these events inside the church’s cloister. On a clear day, why not climb one of the towers for panoramic views of Zürich and the river below?
In 2009, German artist Sigmar Polke installed mesmerising stained glass windows in Grossmünster, made from thin slices of agate rock. They show images of biblical figures in striking colours and will take your breath away.
