A charming Alpine town nestled between 2 lakes
The pretty town of Interlaken sits between two lakes – Thunersee and Brienzersee – and is perfectly positioned as a gateway to the Bernese Alps. To the northwest lie Alpine foothills and the Swiss capital of Bern, and to the south, you’ll see snow-capped peaks.
Once you arrive in Interlaken, you’ll be conveniently located for exploring two stunning mountain valleys. The first is Lauterbrunnen valley, home to charming Lauterbrunnen village, towering cliffs and tumbling waterfalls. While at the end of the second valley, you’ll find Grindelwald village at the base of the Eiger.
Both Lauterbrunnen and Grindelwald have quick access to almost endless hiking trails, with options suited to most abilities. Plus, you can connect to surrounding peaks and other mountain villages by scenic train, cable car and gondola rides.
When you’re not out and about discovering the natural beauty around Interlaken you can explore the town itself.
As well as browsing for souvenirs and enjoying the dining options on offer, you could visit Interlaken’s castle and church, once an Augustinian monastery, dating from the 1100s.
You might also like to stroll through a few of the town’s local parks, such as the English and Japanese gardens. Or why not take a boat tour on Lake Brienz (Brienzersee) and glide past Iseltwald castle?
