Switzerland's largest lake
Lake Geneva is located in the French-speaking part of southern Switzerland on the border with France. Split between the two nations, you’ll also see it called by its French name: Lac Léman.
Covering an area of around 580 square kilometres (224 square miles), it’s the largest lake in Switzerland. Size aside, visit Lake Geneva and you’ll be just as impressed by its beautiful surroundings as you are by its shimmering waters.
To the north lie the Jura Mountains, and to the south, you’ll glimpse snow-capped Alpine peaks. Plus, visit the northern shore and you could tour vineyards of the Lavaux wine-producing region.
The beautiful city of Lausanne also lies on the lake’s northern shore and is home to the gothic Cathédrale Notre-Dame. In Lausanne, you can walk the cobbled streets of the old town, relax at the lakefront and indulge in delicious local cuisine.
There are plenty of other activities and cultural highlights for you to enjoy around Lake Geneva. There are just a few of the best things for you to do in the region:
- Visit Chillon Castle (Château de Chillon), complete with medieval turrets and a breathtaking Alpine backdrop.
- Hop aboard a slow-paced paddle steamer, for a different perspective on your surroundings.
- Stroll around the pretty resort town of Montreux, which hosts an annual jazz festival.
- Choose one of the many beaches and take a refreshing dip in the lake.
- Take a train along the lake’s northern shores, soaking up stunning views as you go.
- Check out the city of Geneva, home to an eye-catching fountain that shoots water about 140 metres (460 feet) into the air above the lake.
