Medieval architecture around every corner
Lucerne is a picturesque city located in central Switzerland, nestled between Lake Lucerne and the Swiss Alps. Known for its charming old town, wooden bridge and scenic waterfront, Lucerne is a must-see on your tour of the country.
Wander around the old town centre to admire the architecture and colourful buildings. Then take a stroll along the Reuss river. It won’t be long until you spot the wooden Chapel Bridge (“Kapellbrücke”), a landmark of the city since the 1300s.
Further inland from the lakeshore, you’ll find the Spreuer Bridge, another wooden, covered, pedestrian walkway across the river.
From here, head uphill to walk along the impressive Musegg Wall, Lucerne’s historic city wall and towers. You can wander freely across the wall. Don’t miss the Zytturm tower, famous for its clock face and artistic design.
Another highlight you might wish to photograph is the Lion Monument (“Löwendenkmal”). It’s a work of art but also a commemoration of the lives lost during the Storming of the Tuileries in Paris in 1792.
There are also plenty of opportunities to learn more about Lucerne and the region at the local museums. You could visit the Swiss Museum of Transport, the Lucerne History and Art Museums as well as the Hans Erni Museum and the Richard Wagner Museum.
You can’t spend time in Lucerne without taking advantage of its incredible scenery. Head to the waterfront promenade to take in views of Lake Lucerne. It’s a stunning body of water that stretches over 110 square kilometres (44 square miles).
South of the city, you’ll find Ufschötti park, which has a small beach where locals go swimming on warm summer days. The clear water is very appealing.
You can enjoy views of the surrounding mountains too. Mount Pilatus and Mount Rigi can be spotted from the city. Why not take a cable car ride up either to see the view from above?
