One of the most recognisable mountains in the Alps

The Matterhorn is one of the most famous mountains in Europe. Its distinctive outline even inspired the triangular shape of Toblerone chocolate bars.

It should also come as no surprise that the Matterhorn’s stand-out pyramid shape has been capturing the imagination of mountaineers and rock climbers since the 1800s.

Indeed, the first ascent of the Matterhorn was in July 1865 by the British mountaineer Edward Whymper and his guided party. Just 6 years later, another Brit named Lucy Walker became the first woman to reach the summit.

To learn about the race for the first male and female ascents, head to the Matterhorn Museum – Zermatlantis in the village of Zermatt.

Thankfully you don’t need to reach the top to appreciate this iconic snow-dusted peak. In fact, you’ll get unforgettable views without even having to leave the charming village of Zermatt, which lies at the mountain’s base.

The best ways to soak up the scenery? Aside from taking in the view from the streets of Zermatt, you could go for a leisurely valley hike. There are plenty of trails for you to choose from. What’s more, you can skip many steeper routes by riding one of the mountain railways or by hopping into a gondola or cable car.

No matter how you explore, you’ll be awestruck by your surroundings. Think snow-capped peaks, wildflower meadows and idyllic pine forests. Not to mention the crystal-clear lakes that’ll tempt you in for a dip.
