Breathtaking views of glittering lakes and Alpine valleys
Just south of Lake Lucerne in Switzerland, the peaceful town of Stans is a gateway to the mountains. Wander the cobbled streets, then board a historic wooden funicular to begin your journey up the mighty Mount Stanserhorn.
This funicular was first opened in 1893, making it one of the oldest in the world. Stanserhorn’s innovation didn’t stop there. In 2012, the world’s first open-air cable car began taking visitors up into the clouds.
The CabriO gondola has two decks, and the bravest travellers can climb to the roofless top deck to experience a thrilling ride through the sky. Be amazed by panoramic views of the Alps around you and blue Lake Lucerne stretching out below.
Once at the peak, you can dine in a revolving restaurant and try local Swiss delicacies with spectacular views through every window. Spot the tiny towns and villages and admire lush Alpine forests under snowy peaks.
Stanserhorn has many hiking trails for intrepid explorers. On your walk, see if you can spot the elusive marmot, a fluffy mammal that only emerges in the summer. You may even see golden eagles flying overhead!
