Picturesque lakeside city in northwest Switzerland
Neuchâtel is a picturesque, university city located in the western French-speaking part of Switzerland. Positioned on the northern shore of Lake Neuchâtel, the city is the capital of the canton of the same name.
If you enjoy a blend of nature, history and culture, then this is an ideal destination to add to your Swiss itinerary. The city is known for its lakeside location, and views of the spectacular Jura Mountains.
Neuchâtel also benefits from a rich cultural heritage dating back to the 12th century. This is reflected in the well-preserved architecture of the old town as well as the city’s museums.
Neuchâtel Castle is one of the highlights to see while you’re here. It overlooks the city so you’ll enjoy uninterrupted views during your visit. Next door you’ll find the Collegiate Church, another great place to check off your wish list. It’s a striking example of Gothic architecture.
The city is home to a number of interesting museums, including the Laténium Park and Museum of Archeology, dedicated to the prehistoric history of Switzerland. It is located a 10-minute drive on the outskirts of town.
In the city centre, you could explore the Natural History Museum (“MHNN”) or the Art and History Museum (“Musée d'Art et d'Histoire”). Or go for a stroll through the Esplanade du Mont Blanc to see the city from the waterfront.
For cool photo opportunities, don’t miss the Fontaine du Bannere and the “Passerelle de l'Utopie”.
