A spectacular sight of natural beauty
The River Rhine flows all the way from the Swiss Alps, across France, Germany, and the Netherlands, to eventually join the North Sea. The best sight along the river’s banks is just before it leaves Switzerland: Rhine Falls, the most powerful waterfall in Europe.
Though not very tall, with its highest point standing at 23 metres (75 feet), the average water flow is a staggering 600 cubic metres per second in summer. The highest flow ever recorded here was more than 1,250 cubic metres per second in 1999!
At the tiny castle of Schlössli Worth, you can dine on a riverfront terrace with a mesmerising view of the waterfall. From this little fort you can also board a boat tour to get up close and personal with the thundering waters.
The nearby Rhine Falls Adventure Park offers 170 obstacles for active travellers to conquer. Dare to try the ‘Panorama Express’ zipline with incredible views of the falls. For a gentler journey, board the Rhyfall Express pedestrian train in the town of Neuhausen am Rheinfall.
