The largest city in Switzerland
You’ll find Switzerland’s largest city, Zürich, in the north of the country, near the German border. It is renowned for being a centre of banking and finance, but it’s also a top destination in Europe for fans of history, culture and good food.
On a day out in the city, you could take a stroll through the charming Old Town (“Altstatd”) and along the Limmat river. Soon you’ll be admiring the grand architecture of the historic buildings as you make your way through the windy, cobbled streets.
A few of the top highlights of the city are located here. This includes Grossmünster and Fraumünster, two churches just across the bridge from each other. Wander further north to enjoy panoramic views from the top of Lindenhof hill.
The Zürich Opera House is an impressive building to see. Nearby, you could also go for a walk along Lake Zürich, where the promenade is an ideal place to catch some sun. A 20-minute walk will take you past the Aussichtspunkt Riesbach observation deck and to Zürichhorn, a popular waterfront park.
On the western side of the lake, is another park, Arboretum Zürich, a favourite with the locals. There are some swimming areas here if you’d like to dip your toes in the water.
If art and culture are what you’re after, don’t miss the Swiss National Museum located near the main train station. Here you’ll learn about the country’s rich heritage. Or pop into Kunsthaus, the Zürich art museum. And if you’re a football fan you might want to visit the FIFA Museum in the Enge neighbourhood.
Zürich is also a great place to start sampling Switzerland’s most famous offerings, cheese and chocolate. Indulge in delicious treats at one of the many local cafés and restaurants in the city centre.
